Mood Board

I chose the Magazines and Online brief (Brief 3) - this consists of creating front covers and contents pages for the first 2 editions. I also need to create one homepage and one linked page for my online working website for my magazine.

The minimum requirements for the magazine front covers and contents pages are: 4+ different main original images for the front covers and contents, editing of magazine ( photos, text and layout), written text such as masthead, a different setting for each front cover (either completely different or significant differences in props), 2+ models of different social groups and a call to action pointing readers to the online counterpart. The website needs to include a minimum of: original audio or audiovisual content, 2+ original images that promote brand (at least one on each page), must promote the magazine and enable them to interact, appropriate conventions of website designs, text introducing the main features, working links between home page and linking page and a range of media techniques.

The brief references " a fun-loving 16-25 year old mass market demographic". The results of my survey fit in with the brief. My target audience is 16-25 because the majority of people who answered my survey were within that age bracket. They tend to like bright colours in the products and enjoy pop music and popular artists such as Ariana Grande and Shawn Mendes ( these are popular and well known artists at the minute). My results show that my audience wouldn't spend more than £4 on a magazine- this helps me to understand how much my media product should cost in order to attract my target audience.

In this task I will focus on the type of images, photography, typography and colour scheme I intend to use in my final product to create a mood board of ideas that reflect this. This mood board will help to influence the outcome of my final product- this will help me to think of a theme and other elements I can include in my coursework.

Analyse of Mood boards-

Creating these mood boards has helped me to decide the type of photography, colour scheme and typography I am going to use to create my media product. As you can see from my mood board I have tested out many different fonts to see what one best fits the style of my magazine. I will use a similar font throughout using serif font for it to tie in with my From the results of my survey I needed to include a bright colour scheme- for this reason I have chosen to use turquoise, coral pink and grey. This is because these colours stand out and work well together- they also seem to fit with the genre of my magazine (Pop) because usually the music and artists are associated with bright colours. It is important for the colour scheme to fit with the genre of music or else it would look out of place and distract from the actual content of the magazine. For example people associated dark colours such as black with rock, if a rock magazine had a colour scheme of bright pink it wouldn't suit the genre. Both my magazine and the website will follow this colour scheme because I want them to tie in together and be easily recognisable. The results of my survey showed that people expected to see a mid-shot for the photography, so I stuck with mid shot images of pop artists. When I take my photographs I will bare the images on my mood board in mind. I will use high-key lighting and a bright background (preferably white or grey) but I am going to test them to see what works best. To include intertextual references I could incorporate the lyrics of a famous song into one of the cover lines or i could use typography that is similar to a band. I think I am going to use the End of Audience theory by including a comments page on my website where the audience can request certain artists or articles.

To conclude, creating and analysing these mood boards have provided me with a framework of ideas for my magazine and will mean that I can look back on this if stuck on ideas for my coursework. These ideas will hopefully be seen when my final product is finished.

  1. S - This is an impressive analysis of your mood boards. You were detailed in how they help you come up with content for your magazine.
I - Instead of choosing colours because "they stand out", can you use denotation and connotation reasons for choosing them?
T - Add this to your conclusion using RED PEN.
